Brian: Good afternoon!

Ida: Good afternoon, Brian. How are you?

Brian: Fine, thanks. Jena, I haven’t seen you for a long time.

Jena: Yes, I was trained for four weeks.

Brian: Ok, good. How were your past weeks?

Jena: It’s good. I went to Guizhou province this week.

Brian: Really?

Jena: Yes. I brought some Christmas gifts for you.

Brian: Oh, thank you very much!

Flyer: What shall we learn today?

Brian: Today, we’ll learn some grammars.

 

 

Grammar Learning

Prepositions

A preposition connects a noun to other words and shows the relationship between them.

A preposition in combination with another word many have multiple meanings.

Example:

make up your bed 整理床铺

make up your face 化妆

make up your mind 做决定

make up a story 编故事

make up a list 写清单

make up the difference 换零钱

make up last week’s homework 补作业

make up for lost time 补时间

make up with your girlfriend 修复与女友的关系

 

Different prepositions can follow the same verb to change its meaning completely.

Example:

break down 倒塌

break in 闯入

break off 中断

break out 爆发

break out of 摆脱(束缚)

break through 灵光乍现,灵感突至

break up 打碎;分手(关系破裂)

 

Use in, on, or at in the appropriate blank spaces.

1.     I live in Denver.

2.     I live on Main Street.

3.     I live at 55 Main Street.

4.     She lives in California.

5.     They used to live at 84 Lincoln Street.

6.     Mary’s home is in San Francisco.

7.     Her house is on Market Street.

8.     She has lived at 70 Washington Street for a long time.

9.     My home is in New York City.

10. Their house is at 19 Broadway.

11. That store is on Fifth Avenue.

12. I saw him in Boston.

13. We visited our parents at their home in Chicago.

14. Does Alice still live on McKinley Avenue?

15. His book is on the table.

16. The table is in the room.

17. The chair is in the corner.

18. The books are in/ on the bookcase.

19. The pictures are on the wall.

20. I first met him in/ at our English class.

21. I visited them in Illinois in 1956.

22. I have four books in all.

23. I haven’t seen him in a long time.

24. I’ m going there in June.
